This week will see the Bargoed RFC senior teams and Youth team start their league campaigns on Saturday.
The 1st team are away to Cardiff Met in the National Championship. The Warriors take on local rivals Penallta in the opening round of National Conference, and the Youth entertain Whiteheads at home in a Dragons League game.
The Warriors were in good form last Saturday as they travelled to Tredegar Ironsides and came away with a 36-19 victory.
Captain and veteran Ian Jenkins led from the front as usual, and was surrounded by a very young side which included six players from last years youth team, and two of the current youth squad in Keaton Davies and Kieron Coulsen, who both acquitted themselves very well.
There were also senior debuts for twins Robert and Jack Carey on the wings.
This was an encouraging performance with a no. of players unavailable due to holidays and work commitments.
Bargoed scored six tries through Ieuan Morgan, Keaton Davies, Jack Price, Luke Ellaway, Evan Rees and Christian Cuss. Morgan also notched two conversions and Cuss kicked one.
It was good to see ex Bargoed player Lewis Protheroe in the Ironsides team in his Player- Coach role, and his Dad Rod, a long time Bargoed RFC and Ironsides supporter.
This is sure to be an exciting season for all three of Bargoed’s Saturday sides, and for all the Mini and Junior ranks who kick off this Sunday.
