Bargoed Warriors travelled to Rhiwbina for their second National 2nd XV Conference game hoping to build on the recent victory against Penallta.
This was a humdinger of a game with both sides playing some good rugby in difficult conditions. Bargoed just edged out the home side with a 17-15 win. There were tries for Mike Kavanagh and Jordan Howells and seven points from the boot of James Hallett. This was another good test and for the second time in two weeks The Warriors ground out a result.
There were good performances all round but Jason James picked up the Man of the Match Award. It was good to see the younger boys stepping up with Jay Moon, Morgan Rowlands, Connor Morgan and Niall Alexander all doing well, alongside versatile veteran Ian Jenkins, who turned out in the back row this week!!
Coach Gary Jones was in positive mood and stated ‘These are the sort of tough games that we need, the standard in the 2nd XV Conference is excellent and we know we’ve got some big challenges coming up in the next few weeks in the Conference and also a WRU Bowl game v Trinant, which will also be tough.’
The Youth continued on their winning ways with a hard fought 22-6 win at home over Brynmawr in the league. There were tries from Luke Cusack, Morgan Lloyd and Ryan Matthews with Rhys Thomas chipping in with seven points with the boot as well.
Iwan Davies and Lewis Cooper picked up the Man of the Match Award, but this was an excellent squad performance all round.
The foundations for the victory was Bargoed’s set piece with the scrum particularly effective, and their excellent defence. However that’s not to take anything away from their attack with some excellent tries scored in very difficult conditions.
This team continues to grow week on week with good numbers training, and everyone working hard, there is a real buzz about this squad.
