The Warriors travelled up the A470 to face Brecon in a National Conference (East) fixture, looking to build on their unbeaten start to the season. Brecon are formidable opponents who turned the Warriors over last season.
Bargoed started well and had a fantastic opening half hour where they flew into a 26-0 lead and looked to be coasting to victory. However the hosts had other ideas and fought back valiantly to close the gap on the Warriors.
Bargoed had enough firepower to finish them off though, and ran out 36-19 winners in a titanic battle with the hosts.
Bargoed’s points came from five tries scored by Luke Ellaway, Ieuan Morgan, Niall Alexander, Glen Lucas and Callum Davies, with Ellaway kicking 11 points as well.
Team Manager Gary Jones was pleased with the effort of the squad and said ‘Brecon is a tough place to come and we knew that we’d need to work hard to get a win up here. The boys played extremely well and although we tailed off a bit, we were really pleased with our performance early on’
Bargoed Youth also put in a great shift at home, as they defeated Caerleon 28-15 with tries from James Chard, Lewis Cooper, Keaton Davies and Rhys Thomas.
Bargoed’s prop Ethan Thomas had an excellent game both at set piece with his impressive scrummaging, and also in the loose where he worked hard.
Bargoed lost Jake Rees through a concussion injury and everyone wishes this skilful and talented player a quick recovery to see him back in the park. This was another good performance from this hard working and fast developing group of players.
This week the 1st XV are home against Cross Keys in a National Championship fixture at Bargoed Park.
The Warriors have another tough away assignment as they take on Cardiff Met RFC in a National Conference tie.
The Youth travel to Caldicot in another Dragons League fixture.
